I need help with 2nd grade math

Can someone help me understand the thought process being used to solve this? This isn’t how I learned to do it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We’re going back through 8th grade algebra right now. I have no clue what that is

Oh, it’s breaking it down by 10’s, trying to make it easier

Weird

It was a simpler day when we simply learned to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Took my wife (28 year teacher) 15 minutes for me to get it. What a mess…she says it is common core crap
Break the 20 out look for doubles Subtract the 9 ( or whatever that is in the equation) Use the answer of that (1) to check for the answer by adding it back to the double. What an ever loving mess…only a person that thinks this is the way to learn may would vote for Biden…lol
AC, that is completely stupid math manipulation. This is why kids have trouble with math, taking a one step problem and making it a 3 step.
First, make 20 into two values, 10 and 10. Then, subtract 9 from one of the 10s leaving 1. Now, add 1 to the other 10 and you get 11. Completely assine and schools should be embarrassed for this type of BS.
It’s showing why if you were to do the problem the old fashion way you would scratch off the two and draw a little one to borrow(or regroup).
Basically you are putting a 1 in the 10s place to represent 10, and a 10 in the ones place so you can do 109. After subtracting you are left with 1 in the ones place and 10 from the original.
Common core.......this is what will be next

that looks like the first semester curriculum for ballot counting

So AC, your sayn you don't understand simple 2nd grade proximity algorithmic math?
I wonder about ya sometimes... :D The fish are biting, and there's hogs to be killt. Gotta go!
In order to subtract 9 from 20, you first must understand how the 20 got there. Ah, two 10s. 10 take away 9 is 1. 1 plus 10 is 11. And that's how you get to the answer.

That’s kinda like driving through California to get to New York from Texas.

My grandson got a bad grade on his math test. The way they teach it now I think I’d fail it too. :(

So in order for a 7 year old to learn simple subtraction. They have to learn how to divide the first number by 2 then start solving the problem? Who came up with this mess? I don’t even know how to help him because it seems so unnecessarily complicated to solve it the way the book shows. What was wrong with the old school way? What if it’s 219? 10.5 and 10.5? :(

The process is called decomposing numbers. It’s a pretty common way to teach math

Funny thing is, I taught myself how to do common core math in the 80’s before it was the cool thing to do. Not much of an advantage on smaller numbers like above but it’s faster when working with larger numbers, at least for me it is. I struggled in math for a long time, then sometime in jr high I just started seeing and using the numbers in 10’s/100’s and found it much easier to work the problem in my head. When helping my kids with math as they were being taught common core the graphs and block pictures they used for examples just seemed to confuse things more than help.
What’s most irritating to me is most math problems my kid has now are word problems and the problem always seems to be worded to trick or deceive the student. Why can’t they just work math problems, they have an English class for reading comprehension?
I’m sure glad that my children didn’t have to go through that crap. I’d of probably gone to jail for getting mighty ugly with the school over that mess.

I say make the 20 a 15 + 5 otherwise it’s racist! Keep it diverse.

**** that!

I fail too looking at original post....NUTZ and I took all HS maths/alg/trig/calc and made Assssss

Dumbing down of society pretty sure it is working

I had to google everything when my granddaughter was in grade school. I use everything from addition and subtraction up to trig every day at work. I couldn't do grade school math. :(

They have 4 kids. I think my DIL had all the homeschooling she could handle in 2020. :)

I just hate that this is what we are doing to the kiddos in our own schools…. I say defund the teacher unions… And good on you taking time to help your grandkids….
Wait until he starts drawing lines and pictures to figure it out. It takes them twice as long to show there work this way than how we were taught.

Take something simple and complicate it

That method looks like a solution in search of a problem...

Stupid!

Wait until you see that the handwritten work to figure out the answer for 4+5 is different than it is to figure out 5+4. One uses the 'double plus one' rule and the other uses the 'double minus 1' rule.
Stupid!!!

My wife was showing me some papers where the kids "couldn't get it" doing that. We had an intense discussion (read argument) about how idiotic that method of teaching is but that's the way they do it.
Too much of education no longer makes sense. My helper went to the the local community college and is fixin ta graduate with his associate degree and all he's taken is basic math, histories, English literature, psychology and a ton of "electives" . He has yet to take a single course geared toward his career field. Says he has to go to a different school for that. Our education system is messed up. Sent from my SMG892A using Tapatalk
I think they are teaching how to answer the question instead of teaching an understanding of mathematics. My 9th grade son has to use his fingers and write stuff down to answer simple questions like 22+14 and still doesn't know multiplication tables....and he is in advanced math.
Not sure how he will ever be able to handle integral or derivative tables.
